Leonard Brzeziński

Leonard Brzeziński

"Leonard Brzezinski (1904-1984)". - A catalogue of the work of an outstanding embroiderer and Kashubian artist from Viel.

The publication includes an extensively researched biographical profile of the embroiderer and teacher who is highly regarded in ethnographic circles and still little known in Pomerania. It contains a great deal of information about his embroidery craftsmanship, which is distinguished by the author's elaboration of motifs, careful composition, original colouring and rich artistic output dating back to the war. It also contains some information about the history of the Kashubian Museum in Wielu, of which he was the founder. A great asset of the catalogue is the extensive photographic documentation it contains, including reproductions of embroidery designs drawn by his hand on tracing paper, colour and composition samples, tables of the author's elaborations of particular elements and motifs, examples of decorative products made by him also from cattle horn, as well as several archival photographs showing the author himself in various periods of his life. Two articles included in the catalogue are particularly noteworthy: Maria Czaplewska - the author of the exhibition scenario, which is a detailed biography of Leonard Brzeziński, based on an analysis of the family archive, and Lidia Białkowska - discussing the artist's embroidery from an ethnographic point of view, against the background of the characteristics of traditional Kashubian embroidery.

The publication of the catalogue and the organisation of the museum exhibition were included in the programme of the European Year of European Heritage, celebrated in 2018. The patronage of the project was assumed by the Association of Folk Artists, the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association, o. Chojnice and the Society of Friends of the Museum in Chojnice.
